Well, I Guess We’re Doing This

I had been kicking around the idea of starting a blog to talk about my passion for film for a long while now. I even created a Wix blog back in 2020 and wrote a post! By the time I finished I was so disgusted with my writing that I decided to scrap the entire idea and I didn’t dare try again for three years. Hopefully we can be braver this time.

This blog is intended to have several purposes:

1. To Log My Reactions to Entries in a Film Education Course

I’ve structured a film education course (alright fine, I asked Chat GPT to structure a film education course) and as I read and watch films covering topics like Silent Era Expressionism, the French New Wave, Film Noir, and the New Hollywood, I will record my reactions here. All are welcome to follow along with me and before long we’ll all be film-literate enough to recommend our friends and family the perfect old movie they’ve never heard of and probably will never see.

2. To Host My More In Depth Reviews

The burden of deciding whether to post a snappy one-liner or a long in-depth review on my Letterboxd profile is sometimes too much to bear. Luckily I won’t be bearing it any longer. From now on, if I have more to say than one or two lines, it’ll go here, linked from my short yet hilarious and under-appreciated Letterboxd review.

3. To Platform My Broader Observations On Film and General Storytelling

I frequently find myself musing over the shift in prominence of introspective narrative storytelling from film to TV over the past 25 years, or the way that Kubrick uses real world intrigue to provide exposition for the fictional worlds he constructs, or how Zack Snyder ruined my life making the absolute worst movies featuring all my favorite comic book characters. Usually those thoughts get to sent via text to whichever of my friends lost the most boring version of Russian Roulette possible after I have one too many whiskey gingers on a Friday night. Now they will go here, so my friends are safe unless they happen to actually want to know my thoughts on these things.

4. A Catch-All For My Other Passions in Entertainment

Sometimes I’m taken with a new album, or I discover a trend in an artist I am revisiting that I never noticed before. Sometimes I’ll play a video game that reveals a totally new mode of storytelling that’s completely unique. Sometimes I’ll want to vent about how Netflix inorganically sustained an unsustainable business model to gobble up market share only to then hike prices, killing the high functioning Hollywood system in the process. Now I’ll have a space to talk about all of these things when they arise.

So welcome all, I hope you stick around and subscribe so you’ll know when I post new stuff. I hope to have at least one post per week, so hopefully at that rate you don’t get too sick of me too fast.
